If One Thing is Infinite, Everything is Infinite

Last night I found myself sitting at my local viewpoint watching the glittering lights of London flicker against the backdrop of a night sky. As I sat there watching Wembley Stadium’s arch gradually change colour from white to blue and numerous commercial aircraft glide into Heathrow Airport I set off down one of many rabbit holes I regularly visit.

This particular rabbit hole is probably the one I visit the most when I have been indulging myself with the devil’s lettuce. At the entrance to the hole is a sign that reads “what is life” and the exit is usually what you may call a ‘hippy-dippy’ theory. Or my nan would, at least.

While I have no big words or scientific hypothesis to prove, disprove or even validate my ‘realisation’ (I’m not sure you can even call it that) I felt strongly enough about it that I wanted to write it down.

The topic I was contemplating was, as you might guess from the title of this post, infinity. While thinking about infinity and what it means I started off on the pretty standard path of “if the universe is infinite, then everything that can happen, will happen”.

This lead to the usual train of thought that “there are infinite universes in which I just fell off my bike and broke my leg” and ended up coming to a conclusion I have not met before: if one thing is infinite, everything is infinite.

To Infinity

Think about it, I did, a lot, how can the concept of infinity exist in a universe where anything is finite? For, if one thing is infinite there must be a platform which it can be infinite in, and that platform must also be infinite.

If such a platform were to exist it would mean everything within it were also infinite in one way or another. I’m not theorising that there is an infinite amount of water in a given cup. What I am suggesting is that the said water has an infinite dimension to it.

The water itself may not have an infinite physical presence but it does contain energy. According to the first law of thermodynamics “energy can’t be created or destroyed” which would mean that energy is infinite, it just.. is and always will be.

As such, if we accept that everything in existence possesses some kind of energy and that energy is infinite we have to also consider the fact that everything is… infinite.
